An outfit that holds a powerful message. Thank you LatinaMADEnotmaid for starting this movement and helping to shed light on a stereotype that continues to plague and is embedded into the hispanic culture. Thank you for this voice! What does Latina MADE mean to you?
🌹🌹🌹Personally, I am in a position of incredible advocacy for others and, as a Latinx, feel especially more driven to address matters like these within our community. Reading about this movement inspired me to join because I rarely see us (latinx’s) being portrayed as educated strong women, especially in the arts.
I recall an infamous scene in one of my favorite movie’s growing up, Clueless, where Lucy is the only Salvadorena (in a movie based in California) and is doing what? Playing the cleaning lady once again being stereotyped as a Mexican (See video below).
Changing these stereotypes might impact future generations in ways unimaginable. Efforts where our community is being portrayed in a negative light has become all too common in recent times.
So, I’m here in hopes of reaching other young women like myself who need encouragement to push forward despite continuing to be be oppressed in and by society. If I am able to inspire someone to advance their education and career, I especially hope it makes a seat at a table where our faces are seldom seen. So a big reminder: I AM LATINA MADE, NOT MAID!
